Why This Organisation

Our client connects thousands of brands and retailers with billions of consumers through a global network of product data, user-generated content and shopping intelligence. Their platform powers some of the most widely recognised shopping and review experiences in the world, and the data systems underpinning it operate at a scale most engineers never get near. Founded in 2005 and operating across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, this is a business with real global reach, a well established engineering culture and a strong track record of building collaborative, high performing teams.

They are a certified Great Place to Work across multiple countries and the engineering culture reflects that. Transparency, trust and a genuine passion for the problem they are solving run through the organisation. If you are a Staff level engineer who wants to work on genuinely complex data systems, with real ownership and real impact, this is worth your attention.

The Role and What It Can Do For Your Career

This is a Staff Backend Engineer position on the Insights Back End team, owning major components of the unified back end data layer that powers client-facing dashboards, raw data reporting and product performance reporting. You will define how data should be aggregated and made available to consuming applications, implement the systems and software to make it happen, and use your technical depth to guide where the stack goes next.

The career value here is the scale and the ownership. You will be working on data pipelines and warehousing solutions that aggregate and serve data for some of the world's largest brands and retailers. At Staff level you are not executing someone else's design — you are defining it, mentoring around it and driving best practice across the team. The combination of big data infrastructure depth, API layer ownership and technical leadership scope builds the kind of experience that carries real weight.

Key Responsibilities

•       Own, design, implement and support major components of the unified back end data platform

•       Define how data should be aggregated and made available to consuming applications while maintaining high availability and performance

•       Implement the mechanisms, systems and software to power client-facing dashboards, reporting and data products

•       Use your technical depth to guide the direction of the stack and evaluate the right technologies for the job

•       Drive engineering best practices and mentor talent across the team

What You Will Need

Essential:

•       7 or more years of experience building and supporting scalable, distributed systems using open source tools

•       Proven hands on experience with an object oriented programming language such as Java or C++ and at least one scripting language such as Python or Ruby

•       Strong SQL skills across any dialect, with PostgreSQL experience a plus

•       Experience with an API framework such as Spring Boot

•       Experience with big data infrastructure including HBase, RDBMS or Redshift

•       Experience optimising database performance through indexing, caching and related techniques

•       Experience with a public cloud provider, ideally AWS

•       Experience with ETL, data modelling and large-scale data warehousing solutions

•       Experience with scheduling services such as Airflow or Oozie

•       Experience with modern build tools such as Maven, Jenkins and GitHub

•       Prior technical leadership and/or mentorship experience

•       Strong analytical, technical and communication skills

Nice to Have:

•       Deep AWS experience across CloudFormation, EMR, S3, EC2 and Athena

•       Experience developing prototypes and proof of concept systems

Why You Should Apply Now

Staff level backend roles with genuine data platform ownership, at a globally recognised product company with a strong engineering culture, do not come up often. This is an opportunity to work at real scale, drive technical direction and build the kind of career that matters — without the bureaucracy that often comes with large organisations.

Salary up to £85,000. Hybrid working.
