Flip the Script: Tell Them About Themselves

This isn’t about repeating what the company already knows. It’s about using smart, targeted research to shape powerful answers - and show the interviewer exactly why you belong in their team.
Before you walk into the room (or log on to Zoom), make sure you know:

What the company does (yes, it’s basic - but don’t skip it)

Who their customers are, or who they serve

What challenges or pain points they might be facing

What their goals and values are

What they’re working on now - and where they’re going

What their plans are for the next 6–12 months

Armed with this intel, you won’t just answer questions - you’ll connect the dots between their needs and your experience. You’ll show how your background, skills, and mindset align with their mission, culture, and objectives.
Wondering where to find all this? Don’t worry - we’ve got your back.
At Ocho, your dedicated recruiter is already plugged in. We know the hiring manager, we understand the team, and we can give you insider insight you won’t find on Google. So ask us! Use us!
And here’s the real game-changer: Don’t just show that you understand their challenges - show how you can solve them. Come prepared with examples of times you’ve tackled similar problems, improved a process, or delivered real results.

This is how you go from “a great candidate” to the right hire. And we’ll make sure you get there, every step of the way.

Your Experience Got You Here - Now Let It Work for You

You didn’t come this far just to talk about the next role. You’re here because of everything you’ve already done - and interviewers want to hear about it.
This is your chance to show how your journey so far makes you the right person for their team.
Talk about your recent achievements. Share the moments you’re proud of. Highlight the skills you’ve built - and more importantly, how you’ve used them to solve problems, drive results, or make a difference.
Whether it's leading a project, improving a process, mentoring a colleague, or adapting to change - that’s what sets you apart.
So don’t just list responsibilities. Show your impact.

Own your story. Speak to your value. And let your experience do the heavy lifting. We’ll help you frame it in a way that makes interviewers sit up and take notice.

What’s Your Greatest Weakness?

Ah, the question that makes even the most confident candidates squirm. But here’s the truth: it’s not a trick - it’s a test of self-awareness.
Interviewers aren’t expecting perfection. What they do want to see is how honest, reflective, and proactive you are when it comes to your own development.
So no, “I’m a perfectionist” won’t cut it - it’s been said too many times to mean anything.
Instead, choose a genuine weakness that won’t impact your ability to succeed in the role. Maybe it’s a technical skill outside the scope of the job - but one you're actively working on through courses or projects. Or perhaps it’s something more personal, like finding it hard to switch off after work - and you’re learning to set better boundaries by using tools that block notifications out of hours.
Whatever you share, the key is to own it. Show that you’ve identified the challenge, and more importantly, that you’re doing something about it.

We all have weaknesses - what matters is how we face them. So be real. Be reflective. And show that you’re committed to growth.

Your Turn – Make It a Two-Way Conversation

An interview isn’t just a test - it’s a two-way street. Yes, they’re assessing your fit for the role, but this is also your opportunity to figure out if the company is right for you.
Asking smart, thoughtful questions shows genuine interest - and gives you another moment to shine. It signals that you’re thinking seriously about the opportunity, the culture, and how you’ll contribute.
Here are a few questions worth having in your back pocket:

What does a typical day look like in this team?

What made you join this company - and what’s kept you here?

Are there any concerns about my experience that I can address?

That last one? Gold. It shows confidence, self-awareness, and a willingness to grow.

Be Human. That’s Who They’re Hiring.

Beyond the CV, beyond the prep, beyond the polished answers - you’re a person. Don’t lose that in the process.
Let your personality come through. Share the things that light you up outside of work - whether that’s travel, sport, gaming, volunteering, or your latest side project. These details create connection and make you memorable.
The secret? Balance. You’re not interviewing as a robot - but you’re also not just having a chat with a mate. Blend the professional with the personal in a way that shows who you are, how you work, and why you’re a brilliant addition to the team.

Ocho People is a recruitment agency in Belfast built around one idea - Hiring is too important to be treated as a transaction.

Working as a recruitment agency across Northern Ireland and as a recruitment agency in Dublin, our team brings more than 100 years of combined recruitment experience to every client and candidate we work with, and we understand what it actually takes to build successful teams and scale ambitious businesses in these markets.
Our background spans industries and every stage of business growth. As a recruitment agency in Belfast, we've partnered with start-ups finding their first ten hires, and as a recruitment agency in Dublin, we've helped scale-ups build out leadership teams under pressure. Across Northern Ireland more broadly, we work with established brands protecting and evolving high-performing functions. That range matters because no two hiring challenges look the same, and a recruitment partner who's only ever worked in one lane can't offer the perspective businesses need when the stakes are high.
What sets us apart isn't just the breadth of our experience, it's how we use it. We don't believe in reducing recruitment to a stack of CVs and a keyword match. We bring insight into what's actually happening in the Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Dublin job markets, instinct built from years of reading people and situations, and a genuine understanding of what great talent looks like in practice, not just on paper. That's the difference between filling a vacancy and building a team that lasts.
At Ocho, recruitment isn't just a service we offer, it's a craft we've spent years refining as a leading recruitment agency in Belfast and Northern Ireland. We've lived through the highs of placing exactly the right person in exactly the right role, and the lows of tight markets, difficult searches, and hiring cycles that test everyone involved. We've supported candidates across Belfast, Dublin, and Northern Ireland through some of the most significant, career-defining moves of their working lives, and we've helped businesses make hires that shaped their next chapter of growth. That experience means we know how to move fast without cutting corners, think strategically under pressure, and deliver results without unnecessary process or empty promises.
We're also, simply, real people who care about real outcomes. Recruitment can be an impersonal industry, but that's never been how we operate. Whether you're a business leader working with a recruitment agency in Belfast to build out your team, or a candidate working with our recruitment agency in Dublin to navigate your next career move, you'll find a team at Ocho who is genuinely invested in getting it right, not just getting it done. We back that commitment with the depth of experience, local market knowledge, and hands-on support to make it happen.
If you're looking for a recruitment agency in Belfast, a recruitment agency in Dublin, or a recruitment partner anywhere across Northern Ireland, Ocho People is ready to help you get there.

Our client is a fast-growing AI company building an agentic quality assurance platform that autonomously creates, runs and maintains software tests, so engineering teams can ship with confidence as AI writes more of their code. Its platform runs on custom machine learning models built specifically for testing, and it is trusted by globally recognised enterprise brands across technology, healthcare and professional services. The business is raising its next funding round and is on track for significant growth, with a small, high-calibre Belfast team now expanding into Data Science and Machine Learning.

The Role
This is a new role and the first dedicated evaluation hire, so you will define how the business measures the quality of its AI. The product is an AI agent, and every change to a model, prompt or piece of agent logic can quietly make it better or worse. Your job is to know which, before customers do.
You will work closely with the engineers building agent capabilities and with the team's senior data scientist, and report into the Head of Data Science. The team is small, so breadth matters as much as depth, and you will regularly pick up work outside your core specialism.
The people who thrive here are hands-on and curious about the business itself, not just the technology. You will be comfortable in the data, confident learning on the job, calm when priorities shift, and you will know when an evaluation is good enough to ship and when it needs more work. Cost is a real constraint in a start-up, so you will think about what each LLM call and pipeline costs as naturally as how accurate it is.

Key Responsibilities
• Design evaluation frameworks and metrics covering accuracy, safety, latency and cost across agent and LLM systems
• Build benchmark eval sets that reflect real customer scenarios and edge cases
• Develop automated scoring pipelines using rubric-based grading and LLM-as-judge techniques
• Calibrate automated judges against human review so the team can trust the numbers
• Stand up regression suites that catch quality drops from model, prompt or agent-logic changes before release
• Create dashboards that track model and agent quality over time and across releases
• Investigate failure modes in multi-step agent behaviour and prioritise fixes with the engineering team
• Partner with the senior data scientist on deeper statistical analysis of results
• Balance evaluation coverage against compute and API cost

What You'll Need
Essential:
• 5+ years in ML engineering, NLP or applied data science, with hands-on experience of LLM or agent-based systems
• Practical experience building or operating evaluation frameworks, automated scoring or benchmark systems for ML or LLM outputs
• Strong Python and experience building data pipelines for evaluation datasets
• Solid understanding of NLP and modern LLM capabilities, including prompting techniques, agentic workflows and retrieval
• A strong statistics foundation, including sampling, variance and judging whether a change in results is meaningful
• Ability to design metrics that represent real-world quality, not just benchmark scores
• Working experience with GCP (Vertex AI, BigQuery) or equivalent hands-on experience with another major cloud ML platform
• A degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
• Right to work in the UK
Desirable / Nice to Have:
• Experience with LLM-as-judge techniques, rubric design or human-in-the-loop evaluation programmes
• Familiarity with agent architectures and the failure modes specific to multi-step agentic systems
• Experience operating evaluation systems at scale in production

Why Apply?
• £90,000 to £140,000 base salary plus equity in a business heading into its next funding round
• Fully remote, based in Northern Ireland
• Async-first culture that trusts you to manage your own time and deliver
• Build a function from scratch, with direct influence over how the product's AI is measured and released
• Real breadth: a small team where you will work across engineering, data and ML rather than in a narrow lane
• A clear, transparent five-stage interview process, with AI tools actively encouraged in the take-home exercise
• A long-term career home in a company that is investing seriously in its data and ML function

• Hybrid working from Belfast, 3 days per week in the office
• Backed by more than $430 million from world-class investors, giving you the runway to build boldly

About the Company
Our client is a growing technology business that builds the software powering a global operations network... quoting, logistics, dispatch, invoicing and inventory all run through platforms its engineering teams own outright. The culture rewards judgement and initiative over process: engineers see an issue and fix it, rather than waiting for a ticket. If you want autonomy, a real product mindset and a team that has already moved past debating whether AI belongs in the workflow, this is built for you.

Key Responsibilities
• Own features end-to-end, from idea and design through to shipped, production-ready code

• Collaborate directly with product and engineering leadership to shape technical direction
• Mentor engineers around you and help raise the bar on engineering practice

What You'll Need
Essential:
• 5+ years' commercial experience as a full-stack engineer
• Strong hands-on experience with React and TypeScript
• Strong hands-on experience with Python for backend services and APIs
• Solid experience with AWS and cloud-native infrastructure
• Experience with distributed, event-driven or microservice architectures
• Genuine, demonstrable use of AI tools (Copilot, Claude, Cursor or similar) as part of your daily workflow
• Right to work in Northern Ireland/UK
Desirable / Nice to Have:
• Exposure to Kafka, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB or Kinesis

• Play a real part in infrastructure behind some of the most ambitious AI and cloud projects being built today
• A team that already lives an AI-first way of working, rather than talking about getting there

Senior Full Stack Software Engineer React | TypeScript | Python | AWS UK Remote

Senior-level full-stack role within a rapidly scaling US technology business

Genuine end-to-end ownership across React, TypeScript, Python and AWS

Cloud-native, event-driven distributed systems operating at meaningful scale

Fully remote, UK-based

£80,000 to £100,000 plus a strong benefits package

About Our Client
Our client is a US technology business that has been growing its UK engineering function as the product scales. The team operates within a modern cloud-native architecture and the engineering culture is genuinely autonomous… engineers are expected to understand the problems they are solving, make architectural decisions and take ownership of the software they build in production.
The Role
This is a genuine senior full-stack role, and that word matters here. The team is not looking for a backend engineer who occasionally touches the frontend, or a React specialist who makes small API changes. You will be expected to take a problem from initial product discussion and technical design through frontend, backend, cloud infrastructure, testing and production deployment.
You will work closely with product managers and designers within a highly autonomous environment, contributing to architectural decisions rather than consuming them. The core environment is React, TypeScript, Python and AWS, alongside cloud-native, event-driven and distributed systems. The team is also actively exploring how AI-assisted development tools improve the way software is designed, built and maintained, which makes this an interesting opportunity for engineers who are already working this way and want an environment that actively encourages it.
Key Responsibilities

Design, build and operate production software end to end, owning both frontend and backend from initial design through to deployment

Build sophisticated React and TypeScript applications with a strong focus on component architecture, state management, performance, maintainability and testing

Design and build robust Python services and APIs, including event-driven, asynchronous and distributed systems

Contribute to architectural decisions and be able to explain the reasoning behind them clearly, including trade-offs around scalability, reliability and data modelling

Own the AWS infrastructure relevant to the applications you build, including containers, Kubernetes, serverless technologies, deployment strategies and cloud observability

Work with product managers and designers from problem definition through to delivery, challenging assumptions and proposing well-reasoned technical solutions

Write and maintain automated tests across unit, integration and end-to-end levels as an expected part of delivering production-grade software

Use AI-assisted development tools to improve your own productivity while maintaining full ownership of code quality, security and engineering standards

Participate actively in code review and technical discussion, constructively challenging decisions where a better approach exists

Mentor less experienced engineers within the team

What You'll Need
Essential

Substantial commercial experience delivering production software at senior level

Strong, demonstrable experience with React and TypeScript… building complex applications rather than simple interfaces or internal tools

Meaningful backend engineering experience, ideally with Python, including API design, service architecture, data modelling and asynchronous processing

Working knowledge of AWS and modern cloud-native deployment, including an understanding of what happens to your software after you commit the code

Experience with distributed systems, microservices, messaging or event-driven architecture

A strong approach to automated testing and the ability to explain how that fits within a CI/CD environment

The ability to talk in depth about projects where you have taken genuine technical ownership across both frontend and backend… what problem you were solving, what decisions you made and why

Based in the UK with the right to work here

Desirable

Experience with technologies such as Kafka, Kinesis, PostgreSQL or DynamoDB

Practical experience using AI development tools… Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, LLM APIs, MCP-based tooling or agentic workflows… to meaningfully accelerate real engineering work

Experience building AI-assisted internal tooling, automations or agentic systems, or working with LLM APIs within a production product

Why Apply?

£80,000 to £100,000 base salary

26 days annual leave plus bank holidays

Pension with 10% employer contribution and 10% employee contribution

Fully remote, UK-based

Highly autonomous engineering culture… you own your work from design to production rather than completing tickets within an architecture someone else defined

Complex distributed systems and cloud-native infrastructure operating at significant scale

An engineering organisation that is actively shaping how AI changes the software development lifecycle… not one that is waiting to see what happens

• Belfast, hybrid working.
• Salary on application.
• A genuine blend of people leadership and technical influence, sitting inside the wider product leadership team.
• Direct input into product strategy and roadmap, not just delivery.

The Role
This is a chance to lead a high performing engineering team at the heart of a product used at genuine scale. You will sit within a wider leadership group, working hand in hand with product management and product design to shape what gets built next, not just how it gets delivered. You will be trusted to develop your people, protect their focus, and make the calls on where speed matters and where long term engineering health matters more. If you want a role where your leadership is felt in the product itself, not just in a org chart, this is it.

Key Responsibilities
• Lead, coach and grow a team of engineers, embedding strong agile working practices.
• Drive team performance and product delivery in line with wider business goals.
• Partner closely with product management to shape and prioritise the product backlog.
• Provide technical oversight and direction, working across teams and functions.
• Balance speed to market against long term engineering decisions and technical debt.
• Identify opportunities for your team's professional growth and act on them.
• Anticipate future hiring needs and partner with talent teams to recruit strong engineers.
• Deliver honest, regular feedback and formal performance reviews.
• Flag risks around scalability, performance, security and operational readiness early.
• Stay close to the tools, technologies and challenges your team faces day to day.

What You'll Need
Essential: 6+ years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years as a people manager or lead.
• Proven experience working within an agile software development environment.
• Strong communication skills, able to present clearly to stakeholders and clients at all levels.
• An analytical, data driven approach to decision making.
• Comfort balancing speed to market with long term engineering investment.
• A genuine passion for people management, mentorship and career development.

Desirable: Nice to have, not essential.
• Experience mentoring engineers into their own leadership paths.
• Background in a fast scaling SaaS or consumer technology platform.

Why Apply?
• Salary on application, tailored to your experience.
• Flexible working from Belfast
• A seat at the leadership table, with real influence over product direction, not just delivery.
• Work on a product used by millions of consumers and thousands of brands and retailers worldwide.
• Join a business independently recognised as a Great Place to Work, with a culture built on transparency, trust and doing right by the customer.
• Genuine investment in your own growth as a leader, alongside your team's.
• A company still innovating and growing after two decades, rather than standing still.

Senior Staff Software Engineer (Exclusive)

AI/ML Engineer
Belfast (Hybrid) | Full-time
• Build the AI/ML models that turn billions of pieces of consumer feedback into trustworthy insight
• Work directly on NLP, personalisation and content-quality models at genuine production scale
• Python/cloud stack, with real scope to bring in LLMs and generative AI
• Join a company independently certified as a Great Place to Work in seven countries
About the Company
Since 2005, this business has grown from a single office into a global operation spanning North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, now connecting thousands of brands and retailers with billions of consumers through user-generated content at genuinely massive scale. That scale is exactly why AI and ML sit at the centre of the product, not on the sidelines, and the company's culture has been externally recognised as a Great Place to Work in the US, Australia, India, Lithuania, France, Germany and the UK.
The Role
You'll join a team using machine learning to make sense of an enormous, constantly growing volume of reviews, questions and user-generated content, from spotting low-quality or fraudulent content to powering personalisation and search relevance for shoppers. It's a role with real production exposure: your models won't sit in a notebook, they'll run against live consumer traffic, at a scale most engineers never get to work at.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, train and deploy ML models for content moderation, quality scoring and personalisation
• Apply NLP techniques to extract insight and structure from unstructured consumer content
• Evaluate and integrate LLMs and generative AI where they add genuine product value
• Build and maintain robust MLOps pipelines for training, deployment and monitoring
• Partner with data engineering to ensure models are fed clean, reliable data at scale
• Monitor live model performance and iterate based on real production feedback
• Collaborate with product and engineering teams to translate ML capability into shipped features
Essential:
• 5+ years building and deploying machine learning models in production environments
• Strong Python skills and experience with ML frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow
• Practical experience with NLP techniques and unstructured text data
• Experience with a public cloud provider (AWS, GCP or Azure) for ML workloads
• Solid understanding of MLOps: model deployment, monitoring and retraining pipelines
• Strong analytical thinking and the ability to communicate ML concepts to non-technical teams
Desirable:
• Hands-on experience with LLMs or generative AI in a production setting
• Experience with recommendation systems or personalisation at scale
Why Apply?
• Hybrid working model based in Belfast
• Genuine production-scale ML, not proof-of-concept work
• Direct exposure to LLMs and generative AI applications
• A company independently certified as a Great Place to Work in seven countries
• A culture that rewards curiosity and staying ahead of emerging AI techniques
