How to ace that law firm interview!

Securing an interview with a private practice law firm is a significant milestone in your legal career journey. However, preparing for this crucial meeting is just as important as landing it. Sounds obvious but preparation is key!! We have outlined below some essential points we chat to candidates about when interviewing with our clients.

  1. Research the Firm Before your interview, it is vital to thoroughly research the private practice law firm you are interviewing with. Familiarise yourself with the firm's history, practice areas, clients, recent cases or transactions and any unique attributes that set them apart from competitors. It is also good practice to research the Partner interviewing you, have a look at some key matters and transactions they have undertaken and any articles they have written. This information will help you tailor your responses and demonstrate that you are genuinely interested in the firm. If you ace this question, it really gets the interview off to a great start
  2. Understand the Role! Again, sounds obvious but it is essential to have a grasp of the role and how you meet all the criteria. There will be times you interview without a job description which can make this tricky but I would research people in the team and the Partner to understand the type of work they do. Also, a good recruiter will also talk you through the role so you have a have a clear understanding of the position you are interviewing for.
  3. Know Your CV! Expect your interviewer to ask questions based on your CV. Be ready to elaborate on your educational background, work experience, and legal accomplishments. Highlight any relevant skills and achievements that make you a strong candidate for the firm. Talk through your matters or transactions in detail so the Partner can understand the depth of your technical experience and your exposure to different technical areas of law.
  4. Prepare Questions – this is also really important as well thought out questions show that someone is genuinely interested in the firm and role and show that have put in the preparation required before the interview. I would ask questions about the firm's culture, growth opportunities, or any recent developments that may affect the role. It also helps you to understand if the opportunity is the right one for you too!
