Software Developer

Job description.

Software Engineer (Contract)

A hands-on contract development role building internal tooling and integrations for engineering teams at an energy trading software company, based in Belfast three days a week, paying up to £500 per day inside IR35.

About the Company

Our client is a global technology consultancy delivering engineering teams to a leading provider of energy trading software. Their Developer Experience Hub builds the tools, platforms and workflows that every engineering team relies on, and they need an extra pair of strong development hands as teams move their delivery tooling to GitHub.

The Role

This is a software engineering role, not infrastructure administration. You will maintain and extend the company's Backstage developer portal, build integrations that surface delivery and system-health information, and write the automation and reusable templates that help teams move off legacy tooling. You will work within an agreed technical direction alongside the permanent team and hand over solutions that stay supportable after the contract ends.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and enhance Backstage, building features and integrations that make engineering information and tools easier to find and use.
  • Surface delivery metrics, deployment information and system-health indicators through Backstage.
  • Support teams using GitHub and Azure DevOps, and deliver defined migration work towards GitHub.
  • Help teams move away from TeamCity and Octopus through practical automation and reusable patterns.
  • Improve application and deployment templates, including CI/CD workflows and Helm charts.
  • Improve the metadata linking components, deployments and cloud resources for ownership, environment and cost reporting.
  • Contribute to test environments and .NET Aspire work within the permanent team's direction.
  • Guide teams in using generative AI tools effectively and responsibly in development and testing.
  • Write tested, maintainable code, take part in code reviews and document changes to a high standard.

What You'll Need

  • A strong hands-on software development background, particularly in backend services, integrations or internal tooling, is essential, and the single most important thing we are looking for.
  • A track record of delivering maintainable software with automated tests, version control and code review is essential.
  • Confidence working with APIs, service integrations and distributed systems, and investigating unfamiliar codebases, is essential.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD concepts and the ability to contribute to pipeline automation and scripting is essential.
  • Clear communication, a collaborative approach and a willingness to document decisions are essential.
  • Commercial experience with C#, .NET, TypeScript or Node.js is highly advantageous.
  • Experience building on or extending Backstage is a strong advantage.
  • Experience with GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps, including migrating from TeamCity or Octopus, is a strong advantage.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes (EKS or AKS) and Helm is a strong advantage.
  • Experience with AWS or Azure, Terraform, .NET Aspire or AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude Code is desirable.

Why Apply?

  • Build tools that improve the day-to-day work of every engineering team in the business.
  • Up to £500 per day inside IR35.
  • Based in Belfast three days a week.
  • A development-first role focused on solving problems through code.
  • Modern stack across Backstage, .NET, TypeScript, GitHub Actions and Kubernetes.
  • A straightforward two-stage interview process.

Note For Applicants

All candidates must be currently residing in NI and have full UK Right to Work. Visa Sponsorship for this role is not provided.
