Graduate Software Engineer

Job description.

Graduate Software Engineer

At-a-Glance

  • Belfast, hybrid... you'll need to be in the office regularly, so this one is for people based in or around Belfast
  • Graduate level, ideal for someone who has already built and shipped things on their own
  • JavaScript, TypeScript, React and Node
  • Salary up to £32,000
  • Join a small start-up where your code goes straight to real users

About the Company
My client is a small, product-led tech start-up based in Belfast. The team is lean, moves quickly and ships often, so everyone has a direct hand in what gets built. It's the kind of place where good ideas get tried rather than talked about in meetings.

The Role
If you've spent evenings and weekends building your own apps, tools or side projects simply because you wanted to, this is worth a read. You'll join a small engineering team working across the full stack, picking up real features from day one rather than sitting through a long graduate scheme. You'll work closely with the founders and senior engineers, so you'll see how product decisions get made and have a say in them. People who thrive here are curious, self-starting and happy to own a problem from idea through to release.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and ship features across the front end and back end using React, TypeScript and Node
  • Own small parts of the product end to end, from first idea to release
  • Collaborate with the founders on what to build next and why
  • Write clean, tested code and take part in code reviews
  • Fix bugs and improve performance based on real user feedback
  • Prototype new ideas quickly to test whether they're worth pursuing
  • Contribute to technical decisions as the product and team grow
  • Learn from senior engineers and share what you pick up with the team

What You'll Need

Essential:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related subject, or equivalent self-taught experience
  • Projects you've built on your own outside of coursework, with code or a live product you can show
  • Working knowledge of JavaScript and/or TypeScript
  • Some hands-on experience with React or Node
  • An entrepreneurial mindset... you spot problems and go and fix them without being asked
  • Based in or around Belfast, able to work hybrid, with the right to work in the UK

Desirable / Nice to Have:

  • Something you've launched that has real users, even a handful
  • Experience with a cloud platform such as AWS, GCP or Azure
  • Exposure to databases such as PostgreSQL or MongoDB

Why Apply?

  • Salary up to £32,000
  • Hybrid working from a Belfast base
  • Annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Workplace pension
  • Real ownership from day one, with your work going live to users
  • Direct exposure to the founders and how a start-up gets built
  • Room to progress quickly as the company grows
