Head of Engineering

Job description.

Head of Engineering

We're partnering with a leading organisation in the commodities sector to appoint a Head of Engineering - a senior technical leadership position overseeing multiple agile software teams delivering across a critical product portfolio.

This role blends strategic oversight with hands-on technical leadership. You'll report into the divisional CIO and work closely with delivery leads, enterprise architects, and product teams to ensure consistent, high-quality engineering output and alignment with long-term technology goals.

The organisation is midway through a transformation journey - moving towards cloud-first, modern engineering practices. You'll have the opportunity to drive architectural standards, influence tooling and delivery processes, and embed a high-performing engineering culture.

What you'll be doing:

  • Leading 4-5 cross-functional engineering teams delivering across a value-aligned technology portfolio

  • Acting as the senior technical reference point across full-stack development and architectural design

  • Managing delivery cadence, team performance, and alignment with broader engineering objectives

  • Defining and implementing technical standards across software design, development, testing, and release

  • Driving continuous improvement across the development lifecycle, including tooling and platform evolution

  • Supporting production operations by embedding best practices across monitoring, incident response, and stability

  • Facilitating scrum-of-scrums and working closely with delivery and scrum leads to remove blockers and optimise velocity

  • Shaping future-state architecture in collaboration with enterprise architects and technology leadership

  • Building and nurturing a high-calibre engineering function through internal hiring and third-party partnerships

What we're looking for:

  • Demonstrable experience managing multiple software delivery teams or engineering managers

  • Hands-on background in full-stack engineering - including C#, Java, C++, JavaScript/TypeScript with React

  • Familiarity with event-driven architecture, low-latency systems, and microservices

  • Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, Ruby, Perl) and strong SQL knowledge

  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines, version control (Git), and DevSecOps tooling

  • Familiar with modern architecture patterns including Backend-for-Frontend, Micro Frontends, and distributed systems

  • Comfortable contributing to enterprise-level architecture and guiding engineering direction

  • Focused on delivery quality, stability, and technical excellence

Bonus experience:

  • Previous experience in financial services, trading platforms, or commodities technology

  • Knowledge of scaled agile methodologies (e.g., SAFe)

  • Exposure to DDD, CQRS, GraphQL, actor-based frameworks (e.g., Akka, Orleans)

  • Cloud experience (preferably AWS, but Azure/GCP also considered)

  • Working knowledge of containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes)

Location: Hybrid working - with travel to London as needed
Salary: Competitive senior leadership package
